Tour de Guelph is more than an event for avid cyclists. For Kaitlyn, signing up for this year’s Tour de Guelph was about coming together as a family to support her local community.
This will be Kaitlyn’s first year participating in Tour de Guelph, and she won’t be doing it alone. Kaitlyn is part of the trio that makes up Team Kedwards, riding alongside her dad Jim and mom Michelle. While cycling isn’t something that has traditionally been part of her routine, she considers herself an active person and wanted to find a way to give back. Tour de Guelph was a perfect fit, allowing her to try something new, spend quality time with family, and support an event that makes a positive impact locally.
As a long-time Guelphite, Kaitlyn cares deeply about the community she calls home. And, she’s seen firsthand how much local healthcare matters to the people around her — from friends who have welcomed new babies at GGH, to her father’s volunteerism on The Foundation’s Board of Directors. “It’s easy to forget how lucky we are to have strong care so close to home until you really need it,” she says.
With warmer weather here, Kaitlyn is training for the 50 km route – the longest ride she has ever done. Beyond the physical challenge, what she’s looking forward to most is the energy of event day and the moment her family crosses the finish line together. “My parents are truly my best friends, and I love that we’re taking on this goal together as a family,” she says.
The community response has been incredible, with family and friends rallying behind her to reach her $1,000 fundraising goal. “The encouragement from the people around you really makes the experience even more rewarding,” she says. “I feel like I have a team behind me.”
Her message to others considering getting involved? Don’t hesitate, even if cycling isn’t your ‘thing’. You can register today to join Kaitlyn and hundreds of riders at this year’s Tour de Guelph at tourdeguelph.ca
Or you can support Kaitlyn’s ride by donating to her fundraising page here. Every dollar goes toward Guelph General Hospital and local initiatives through Rotary Clubs of Guelph South and Guelph Trillium, making a difference for families right here in our community.
