Cosmo Carere’s dedication to the Tour de Guelph has been instrumental in making the event the success it is today. His passion and leadership have helped shape it into one of the community’s most impactful fundraisers, supporting its growth year after year.
Cosmo’s involvement began when a group of community-minded individuals and Rotarians approached him with the idea of a bike ride to benefit Guelph General Hospital and local Rotary projects. Intrigued by the vision, he eagerly joined the effort and became a founding member of the original volunteer committee. His contributions helped transform the idea into the first ride on July 6, 2014, which raised $33,000, setting the stage for an annual event.
For over a decade, Cosmo has generously donated his time and expertise. One of his most significant contributions has been in designing the event’s cycling routes. Balancing safety, distance, and terrain is no small task, and Cosmo has navigated challenges such as construction, route changes, and busy intersections to create routes are accessible to riders of all levels. Whether 10, 25, 50, 75, or 100 kilometers, he has always focused on creating manageable, enjoyable courses for participants.
Beyond route design, Cosmo has also provided logistical support, including the company van from his business, Speed River Bicycle. His sponsorship has often extended to include donations of prizes for fundraisers. During strong business years, he has contributed cash sponsorships, furthering the event’s success.
Though Cosmo has never participated in the ride himself, preferring to support riders, his impact is profound. His dedication stems from his belief in the event’s community spirit: “I like that it is a community event, not competitive, so that anyone can take part.” He finds great reward in interacting with riders and assisting along the routes, noting their appreciation when offered help.
Cosmo’s admiration for the volunteers who make the event possible is equally strong: “I’m always blown away every year by the commitment and hard work that all the volunteers put into making the event happen. It’s very much a team effort.”
Cosmo’s contributions to the community have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, a prestigious honour bestowed by Rotary International. Of being inducted into the Tour de Guelph Hall of Fame, Cosmo says with humility, “I’m really humbled. It’s a really kind gesture. Thank you.”
Cosmo Carere’s generosity and commitment have left an indelible mark on the Tour de Guelph, a legacy of service that inspires us all.
